Extending ESP System Run Times with BLAZE®

By Adam Buehler

Can revolutionary technology, such as our BLAZE® metal surface treatment, increase ESP run times? The quick answer is “YES,” often up to 4X in extended run times.

How?

Our BLAZE proprietary chemical diffusion process fuses boride and metal into a corrosion-, erosion, and temperature-resistant surface layer. In applications involving ESP stages, pumps, valves, and AR bearings, BLAZE metal surface treatment has established its ability to extend these components’ run times by 4X or more.

For further proof of BLAZE’s ability to extend ESP run times, this blog covers the real results of BLAZE-treated ESP components.

Field Report – BLAZE®-Treated ESP Stages in the Bakken

In a recent field report, we covered the case of a large operating company in the Bakken experiencing poor ESP system runtimes due to high levels of sand production. This was a recurring challenge throughout the field, and on average, the operator’s ESP pumps were failingfrom the effects of erosion after only 155 days.

The Bakken operator decided to run ESPs with BLAZE-treated stages in two wells. One of the wells using the BLAZE-treated ESP stages achieved a run life of 315 days – over twice that of the conventional ESP stages without the BLAZE treatment. The second BLAZE-treated ESP stage continues to operate today, after 700+ days.

Extending Production with Multi-Phase Charge Pumps

How can an operator best manage high gas volume fraction (GVF) wells? Endurance Lift has a solution engineered specifically for these applications: the BLAZE-treated Multi-Phase Charge Pump. Capable of handling up to 75% GVF, this pump is proven to improve production by better handling gas, which allows a significant increase in drawdown rates.

While conventional multi-phase charge pumps struggle in sandy applications, pumps treated with BLAZE® are proven to be 4X more resistant to abrasive solids and provide significant run time improvements.

Field Reports – Other Applications Benefiting from  BLAZE®-Treatment

Back Pressure Relief Valves – Another example of the benefits of BLAZE®-treated components comes from the Permian, where a large operator was experiencing sand-related challenges in ESP wells. On average, the operator’s surface-mounted back pressure relief valves were failing every seven days

Endurance Lift provided a BLAZE-treated relief valve, which delivered dramatic results – five years after installation, this surface valve is still running today.

AR Bearings – In the Powder River Basin, an operator’s Tungsten Carbide AR bearings had an average run time of only 35 days, failing due to the effects of gas slugging and high temperatures. After the operator replaced the conventional Tungsten Carbide AR bearings with ones treated with BLAZE, average run times increased by 5X.

Real Operators. Real Results

These examples demonstrate that the power of BLAZE® is not theoretical. Its value has been proven in some of the most challenging wells across several basins, producing concrete results for operators.

The benefits of BLAZE-treating are not limited to ESP systems. This revolutionary technology has been proven to extend component run life across all major forms of artificial lift, including rod lift, gas lift, and plunger lift.
